Message from the Superintendent
One of my goals for my first year in Brentwood was to develop a strategic plan for the district that would guide our work. I believe that by setting clear, measurable goals and holding ourselves accountable to the community, we will continue to improve in meeting the needs of all students. The major focus areas for the strategic plan are student success, parent and community engagement, financial and operational stewardship, and positive climate. Teachers and administrators serve on the goal teams and considerable progress has been made in multiple areas. Below I have highlighted some of the work that has been accomplished this school year.
We are focusing on several aspects of student success. One key goal is the implementation of the NWEA assessment, which allows our teachers to assess the student's readiness for learning and track individual student growth. This also gives us the ability to measure our performance against districts across the United States. We are in the process of completing the second round of testing and the data has been very helpful in being able to determine when students need remediation or enrichment to meet their full potential.
We also have a goal focused on expanding offerings and opportunities for our secondary students. While being a small district has many advantages, it is a challenge to be able to provide all of the courses of a comprehensive high school. The committee is exploring some exciting possibilities including virtual offerings and business partnerships that will be implemented next school year.
One of our committees is focused on improving communication with our parents and community. All of our administrators have started on Twitter this school year and I encourage you to follow the district @BrentwoodMoSD and myself @BrentwoodSupt. We are also in the process of revamping the district website to make it more useful and user-friendly. The go-live date for the new website will be in January.
A key focus has been on developing a plan to improve the district's facilities. A facilities committee consisting of parents, community members, and staff have been working for over a year to help determine our next steps. The committee will be presenting a recommendation to the Board of Education in January with the hope that the board will approve bringing a bond issue to the community in April.
We also have strategic plan committees focused on English Language Arts, Math, ACT scores, Standards Based Grading, and Professional Development.
Have a wonderful holiday and a Happy New Year!
Dr. Brian Lane
