Brentwood Debate Competes at 2019 Nationals

{June 27, 2019} BRENTWOOD, MOBrentwood School District is pleased to announce the results of the 2019 National Speech and Debate (NSDA) National Tournament hosted in Dallas, TX. Brentwood qualified four students from the Eastern Missouri District. Brentwood students were part of a select group that represents only the top 3% of all speech and debate competitors in the nation who make it to the national tournament.

Here are the results for each student: Madhumathi Vijayalingam (Class of 2019) placed in the top 30 in Informative Speaking out of around 250 students and advanced twice to make it to the quarterfinals. Madhu was also a Missouri state finalists at the MSHSAA state tournament in April.  Meghan Haug (Class of 2019) advanced at the tournament into the top 30 in Original Oratory out of around 250 of the top orators in the nation. Meghan advanced twice to be placed in the top 30 overall. She was also the Missouri State Champion at the state tournament in April in Radio Speaking category. Lindsey Trieu (Class of 2019) was also a state finalist at the MSHSAA state tournament in April. At the national tournament, she competed in an event known as Program Oral Interpretation with her top peers from around the country. Ben Haug (Class of 2020) placed 6th overall in the nation out of around 250 in Storytelling. Originally, Ben prepared for the tournament with his main event of Humorous Interpretation. When he did not advance in that event, he entered a consolation event he had also prepared known as Storytelling. In the consolation bracket, you must be the top 2 in every preliminary round to advance. Ben made it through the steep competition and cut-off through four preliminary rounds and ended up in the final round of Storytelling. He was also a state finalist at the state tournament in April. “We are so proud of our students for their hard work and dedication,” said Brentwood High principal Dr. Ed Johnson. “To have four of our students compete at the national level and perform this well is an incredible accomplishment.”  Dr. Johnson went on to thank Robyn Haug for her work as Speech and Debate sponsor. "She has done a tremendous job and we share her joy at what her students have accomplished."
