Re-Entry Update

Dear Brentwood Community,

For months, we have worked to prepare for any eventuality regarding COVID-19 and the difficult circumstances we find ourselves in. Safety has been, and will continue to be, our guiding principle when making decisions. In focusing on safety and what precautions we can control, our hope has always been getting our students back into the building as soon as possible. As we have communicated often, our plans are constantly adapting to the latest information available to us. While we originally discussed being fully virtual for the entire first quarter, I’m pleased to see key metrics regarding COVID in our area are trending in a positive direction.

This week, St. Louis County Executive Dr. Sam Page announced support for school districts welcoming K-5 students back to school safely. Since making the decision to begin school virtually, we have been carefully monitoring COVID data and trends, particularly the transmission rate and 7-day average of cases per 100,000 residents. These metrics have been trending in a positive direction since the initial decision was made on July 29th to go fully virtual at the start of the school year. In addition to these positive trends, research shows there is a lower transmission rate among younger children.

This information, combined with the safe, healthy, and successful reopening of our Early Childhood Center, and successful examples of hybrid models in our area that have seen greater numbers of students welcomed back into buildings, I believe we can begin phasing our students’ return to buildings earlier than previously expected. During next week’s Board of Education meeting, I will make the recommendation to adjust our reopening plan and timeline as described below. Parents received a copy of a survey regarding this decision in their email.

Reopening Timeline

  • Phase 1: Kindergarten - 1st Grade traditional program students will begin in-person instruction on September 21.
  • Phase 2: 2nd - 3rd Grade students will follow two weeks later on October 5.
  • Phase 3: 4th - 5th Grade students will follow one week after that on October 12.
  • Phase 4: Middle and High School students will still follow the original reopening schedule and will return at the end of First Quarter on October 26.

These dates are contingent upon data trends and re-entry success as we slowly and safely welcome students back to the building.

In order to be successful, it is critical that families and students follow all of our health and safety protocols. An updated copy of our protocols can be found on our Re-Entry website at bit.ly/bsdreentry. Among these, some of the most important procedures include:

In addition to these guidelines for school, we strongly urge all families to follow St. Louis County Department of Public Health and CDC guidelines to stop the spread of COVID-19 in our community. By working together, we can help ensure our schools are able to safely reopen in a timely manner. It will take all of our efforts to keep our schools safe and open. As we have stated regularly, should we begin to see any indication that there is an outbreak of the virus in our community, we will take swift and appropriate action to quarantine a classroom, building, or the entire district. At any time, we may need to switch back to our virtual learning environment for all K-12 students.

Since we have adjusted our timeline for elementary school students, any elementary family who wishes to make an adjustment to our full-time distance learning program may do so. Please contact your building directly to make this adjustment. You can learn more about our full-time distance learning program by clicking here. The deadline to make this decision will be September 16th.

Thank you once again for your patience and understanding. We will continue to communicate with you regarding any reopening updates. Please be sure to carefully review the information in this email and complete the short survey sent to your email.

Brian Lane, Ed.D.
