Communicating Weather-Related School Closures

Snow on tree branches

Nov. 28, 2022

As colder weather approaches, our administrative leadership team is actively planning ahead for potential school closures that can result from snow, ice or other inclement weather. Our decision to close school is based on a number of factors, including student and staff safety, road conditions and wind chill temperatures.

Learning From Home

In the event of inclement weather school closures, all students will follow the district’s Alternative Methods of Instruction plan. This plan allows us to provide virtual learning opportunities in lieu of a traditional school day. Families will be notified by the district when AMI learning will be provided. Schools and teachers will send follow-up communication with specific virtual learning instructions for students and families.

AMI learning will be used for all inclement weather school closures during the 2022-23 school year. The state of Missouri has approved virtual learning for school attendance, so implementing AMI learning on days when it is unsafe to travel to and from school will ensure that the school year does not extend past Memorial Day.

How We Communicate

When possible, the decision to close school is made by 10 p.m. the night before. However, weather events often occur in the early morning. If the decision cannot be made by 10 p.m., then a decision will be made between 5-5:30 a.m. the next morning.

Our district uses the following tools to communicate weather-related school closures:

  • Text: Families and staff will receive a text notification from ParentSquare when schools are closed.
  • Email: Families and staff will receive an email notification from ParentSquare when schools are closed.
  • Phone: Families and staff will receive a phone call from ParentSquare if the decision to close school is made during the day or before 10 p.m.
  • Website: Inclement weather information will be posted on our district website.
  • Mobile App: Download the ParentSquare mobile app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store to receive push notifications for weather-related school closures.
  • Local News: Brentwood will be listed on all major TV and radio stations for weather-related school closures.

Each night, ParentSquare syncs with Infinite Campus to import contact information for families and staff. Your contact information, including email address and phone number, can be updated in Infinite Campus at any time throughout the school year.

Any changes you make in Infinite Campus will be reflected in ParentSquare the following day. To ensure accurate and timely notifications, please make sure your contact information is up-to-date in Infinite Campus.

We appreciate your continued support and wish you a safe winter season!
