What is Prop E?

Prop E is a $29 million bond issue approved by the Brentwood community in June 2020 to enhance safety, accessibility and student learning at the district's two elementary schools and early childhood center. The projects associated with Prop E are divided into three phases:

  • Phase I: Build a new McGrath Elementary School and Brentwood Early Childhood Center
  • Phase II: Renovate the existing Mark Twain Elementary School
  • Phase III: Demolish the existing McGrath Elementary School and related sitework

Construction of the brand-new, state-of-the-art McGrath and BECC was completed in December 2022. The 60,000-square-foot facility features flexible, collaborative learning spaces that are designed to engage students and support innovative instruction. There are 18 total classrooms, as well as dedicated spaces for art, music, physical education, counseling, intervention and special education services.

The building has separate, secure main entrances for both McGrath and BECC that meet school safety and security best practices. This includes a visitor management system to screen guests in each main office before granting access to the school. The McGrath gymnasium also serves as an ICC 500 storm shelter, which meets FEMA specifications and provides near-absolute protection in extreme weather events.

Mark Twain will undergo extensive renovations during the 2023-24 school year. This project includes a complete transformation of the existing structures, a secure main entrance and a new two-story addition. The ground floor of the addition will be the home of the school's library media center and also serve as an ICC 500 storm shelter. The second floor will connect to the second floor of the original two-story building, creating a total of six classrooms and three dedicated spaces for special education services. Renovations are scheduled to be completed by June 2024.
