Artificial Intelligence in Brentwood

The Brentwood School District views artificial intelligence (AI) as a powerful tool to enhance learning, spark creativity and prepare students for the future. Guided by our vision — Passion. Purpose. Pathways for Success. — we are committed to using AI responsibly, with a focus on student well-being, academic integrity and human agency.

What is AI?

Artificial intelligence refers to computer systems that automate tasks normally requiring human intelligence. One branch, known as generative AI, includes tools such as ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, which can create new content like text, images or music.

Generative AI is not magic—it’s math. These models are trained on vast amounts of data, such as text, images and video. By identifying patterns in that data, they generate statistically likely outputs in record time. While machine learning has existed for decades, only recently have advances in processing power and data management made today’s AI tools possible.

When used responsibly, AI does not replace human judgment—it augments it. We believe AI has the potential to open new pathways for teaching and learning. By equipping students and staff with responsible AI literacy, we can help them understand both the benefits and risks, preparing them for success in school, the workplace and life.

Our Guiding Principles for AI

Balance: Using AI as a supportive tool, not a substitute for human thought

Human Agency: Keeping students and educators in control of teaching and learning

Integrity and Ethics: Promoting honesty, fairness and responsibility

Privacy, Safety and Security: Safeguarding personal data and digital practices
