ELA Curriculum Information

Literacy Supports

Dyslexia Screenings

Kindergarten

All kindergarteners will be screened for dyslexia by January 31st and benchmarked by the end of the school year.

Grades 1-3

All first through third grade will be screened within the first thirty days of the year with mid and end of the year benchmarking

Grades 4-12

Students in grades 4-12 will be screened if experiencing consistent literacy difficulty as noted by assessment scores, classroom teacher determination, or as requested by the student’s parent or guardian.

Wilson Reading Intervention System

The Wilson Reading Interventions System is a structured literacy program that is based on phonological-coding research and Orton-Gillingham principles. These programs provide more intensive instruction in decoding and encoding skills.

Literacy Support Specialist

In addition to Reading Specialists, the district uses the role of Literacy Support Specialist to help support students and staff in their literacy efforts. Their work includes:

Meet with Reading Specialists to collaborate on Dyslexia timeline screening, training, and student data.
Throughout the year: demonstrate, model, and collaborate on the Reading and Writing Units of Study with K-5, and 6-8 ELA teachers.
Support K-2 teachers on the UoS Phonics Curriculum.
Meet with the BHS, ELA teachers during extended advisory once a semester or as needed.
Meet with building professional development reps and principals to organize PD for the early release dates.
