Multilingual learners receive instruction tailored to their individual needs and English proficiency levels. Services may include direct instruction in English language development, small-group or co-taught lessons within the general education classroom, and targeted support to help students build vocabulary, reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.

Brentwood educators use the Missouri English Language Development (ELD) Standards, which align with both the Missouri Learning Standards and the World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) framework. These standards guide instruction to ensure multilingual learners develop the academic language necessary for success across all subject areas.

We value and encourage the use of each student’s first language (L1) as a powerful tool for learning and connection. Students are supported in drawing on their full linguistic abilities—sometimes called translanguaging—to make meaning, express ideas and strengthen their understanding. Families are also encouraged to continue developing and celebrating their home language, as growing in both languages supports long-term academic success and a strong sense of identity.

Each year, multilingual learners participate in the ACCESS for ELLs assessment, as required by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). This assessment measures growth in listening, speaking, reading and writing, helping educators monitor progress and adjust instruction to meet each student’s evolving needs.

Our multilingual learners team collaborates closely with classroom teachers, specialists and families to create supportive learning environments that value each student’s language and culture. Families play an essential role in this partnership, and we strive to maintain open communication in ways that are accessible and welcoming.
