Before a student can receive special education services, the school team works with families to determine whether an evaluation is appropriate. The process typically begins when a parent, teacher or other school staff member identifies concerns about a student's academic, behavioral, communication, social-emotional or developmental progress.

When concerns are identified, the school first reviews available information and, when appropriate, implements classroom interventions and supports to help the student succeed in the general education setting. If concerns continue, the school team works with the family to determine whether a referral for a special education evaluation is appropriate.

If an evaluation is recommended, the Special School District will work with the family to review existing information, obtain written parent consent and complete assessments in the areas of concern. Once the evaluation is finished, the team meets with the family to review the results and determine whether the student qualifies for special education services under Missouri eligibility criteria.

If a student is found eligible, the team develops an Individualized Education Program (IEP) that outlines the student's educational goals, supports and services. Services begin after the IEP is finalized and parent consent is received, when required.
